Softball assistant to try out for National team

Iowa softball assistant coach Stacy Johnson will try out for the 2011 USA Softball Women’s National Team. The selection camp will take place on June 12-17 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Cali., on June 12-17.

Johnson is a Hawkeye softball alum who played for the Black and Gold in 2003-2006 under her maiden name, Stacy May.

“It is a great opportunity to try out for the USA Softball National Team and an outstanding opportunity to represent our country,” she said in a release. “This is a great honor for me and Iowa softball. I hope to represent this program and our alumni well.”

If selected for the National team, Johnson will compete in six events in three different countries, including the World Cup of Softball in Oklahoma City on July 21-25 and the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, on Oct. 17-23.

Before joining the Iowa staff as the hitting coach, Johnson played for the Chicago Bandits in the National Professional Fastpitch League. With the Bandits, Johnson was a three-time league All-Star, earning Rookie of the Year in 2006 and league MVP in 2008 and 2010.
