The Iowa women’s tennis doubles duo of senior Jessica Young and junior Sonja Molnar was selected on Wednesday to play in the 2011 NCAA Division-I women’s tennis championship in Stanford, Calif., on May 25-30.
The 35th-ranked pair was selected as an at-large bid to play among the top 32 doubles teams in the nation. The tandem went 13-6 on the season, including five wins against nationally ranked opponents.
“We are very excited,” Young said. “Getting selected was unexpected, that made it much better.”
This will be the second-straight season Molnar plays in the doubles tournament. In 2010, she teamed up with Merel Beelen, however, the duo fell in the first round to host Georgia (6-2, 6-2). In 1999 and 2000, Toni Neykova and Shera Wiegler made back-to-back appearances — the only other pair in Iowa history to make an appearance.
The doubles championships will be hosted at Stanford University’s Taube Tennis Center.
