Following a two-week break from competition, the Hawkeye men’s gymnastics team took third place at a triangular meet against No. 4 Penn State and No. 8 Minnesota at Minnesota’s Sports Pavilion on March 5.

Penn State placed first with a 351.600; the Hawkeyes recorded a 333.800. With injuries such as a concussion for senior All-American Mike Jiang, Iowa’s lineup was limited, but coach JD Reive said he was pleased with his team’s performance.

“It was a good meet for us,” he said in a release. “It will be a good steppingstone for the next couple of weeks.”

The Hawkeyes were led by sophomore Matt McGrath, who recorded Iowa’s highest score in four of the six events, including a third-place finish on the floor exercise. Ben Ketelsen led Iowa on the pommel horse, and Brody Shemansky was the top Hawkeye on the horizontal bar.

Iowa will return to action on Saturday with a matchup against No. 3 California. The Golden Bears will compete in their final nonconference dual meet — the program will end following the season because of budget cuts.
