Softball goes 2-0 on Arizona trip

The Iowa softball team traveled to Tempe, Ariz. on Feb. 18-19 and returned with two wins and no losses — with all nine starters getting a hit — giving the Hawkeyes an overall record of 3-4.

Iowa’s first game on Feb. 18 ended after only five innings when the Hawkeyes run-ruled Idaho State, 11-3. In the bottom of the fifth, Iowa was ahead 5-3, but a double from Jordan Goshie and an RBI single from Nikki Gentile scored one. Then, a double by Chelsey Carmody and walks to Johnnie Dowling and Liz Watkins loaded the bases, setting up Jenny Schuelke for a grand slam.

In the second game of the day, the Hawkeyes remained close to Seattle University throughout the game to win, 8-7.

Going into the top of the third, Iowa and the Redhawks were tied 2-2. But after Seattle pushed ahead by scoring five runs in the inning, the Hawkeyes responded by turning five base hits into four runs.

In the next inning, Katie Keim singled and Carmody then drove her home with a two-run home run.

“We were definitely on base a lot, and we took advantage of what the pitcher gave us and made things happen,” head coach Marla Looper said in a release.

The two games on Feb. 19 were canceled because of rain.

Overall, the Hawkeyes turned 25 hits into 19 runs on their third road trip of the season.
