Hawkeyes go winless at Big Ten/Big East Challenge

The Iowa baseball team went winless at the Big East/Big Ten Challenge to open its 2011 season.

The Hawkeyes (0-3) surrendered only 10 runs in three games but were unable to record their first victory on Feb. 18-20 in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Jack Dahm’s squad dropped its first game on Feb. 18, mustering only four hits in a 5-0 defeat to West Virginia. The Mountaineers struck quickly against junior Jarred Hippen, scoring all five runs in the first three innings.

Despite a solid performance by the pitching staff, Iowa lost to Pittsburgh in its second game, 3-2 in 11 innings on Feb. 19.

Against Seton Hall on Sunday, the Hawkeyes fell, 2-0. Junior shortstop Kasey Carling broke up Seton Hall Joe DiRocco’s no-hit bid with a single in the bottom of the sixth.

Matt Dermody gave up four hits and two runs in five innings, while striking out five.

Iowa will return to the diamond on Saturday, when it will play St. Louis in Lawrence, Kan.
