Women’s swimmers in eighth place after day two

At the end of Day Two at the 2011 Women’s Swimming and Diving Big Ten Championships in Bloomington, Ind., the Hawkeyes reached a team score of 75 points.

After collecting 43 points Thursday, the team jumped to eighth place. There are two days of competition remaining.

Iowa’s 200 freestyle relay, made up of seniors Caitie Polz and Katarina Tour, junior Daniela Cubelic, and freshman Elise Borja, took eighth and picked up 22 points for the team.

Neither Tour nor freshman Haley Gordon qualified for the final round of the 200 individual medley. Both swimmers were seeded in the top 16 entering Big Tens.

The Hawkeye divers picked up 21 points. Senior Deidre Freeman took third in the 1-meter dive with a score of 338.55. Senior Veronica Rydze finished 12th with a personal college best of 296.35.

Today’s events will include the 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, and the 3-meter dive. The final rounds of each will begin at 6:30 p.m.
