Softball heads west

The Iowa softball team will travel to Tempe, Ariz., this weekend to compete in the Littlewood Classic.

In their second tournament of the season, the Hawkeyes will take on Idaho State at 10:30 a.m. and Seattle at 1 p.m. today. On Saturday, they will face Illinois State at 3:30 p.m. and Arizona State at 8 p.m.

Iowa is currently 1-4 after losing four games at the Red and Black Showcase in Athens, Ga., last weekend.

Idaho State will begin its season against Iowa today, and then the Hawkeyes will face the 0-5 Seattle Redhawks. On Saturday, the competition will increase — Illinois State is currently 4-5 and the host, Arizona State, is 5-1. Arizona State is ranked No. 9 according to ESPN.com and USA Softball and No. 12 according to USA Today and the National Fast-Pitch Coaches Association.

Freshman pitcher Kayla Massey will compete again this weekend after pitching one shutout game against Maryland at the Red and Black showcase on Feb. 11, helping contribute to Iowa’s only win. Massey’s ERA is 3.92.
