IC man charged after threatening girlfriend with a knife

An Iowa City man has been accused of threatening his girlfriend with a knife.

Derrill Jones, 31, was charged Wednesday with domestic-abuse assault impeding air or blood causing bodily injury.

According to an Iowa City police complaint, officers responded to reports of a fight between a male and female.

When officers arrived, they spoke with the female, who said Jones is her boyfriend and they live together.

She said Jones put his hands around her neck and choked her. She had red marks and a scratch on her neck.

She locked herself in her bedroom with two witnesses. Jones allegedly grabbed a kitchen knife and threatened that he was coming in the bedroom to kill her. She got out of the apartment safely.

Domestic-abuse assault impeding air or blood causing bodily injury is a Class-D felony.
