A Coralville man allegedly used more than $1,000 in reward points to purchase items from the Food Service Rewards’ website.

Randy Kahler, 51, was accused Jan. 14 with second-degree theft.

While employed by the University of Iowa Housing and Dining, Kahler took and used reward points belonging to his employer. According to the UI police complaint, Kahler was entrusted to collect and enter reward points on the Food Service Rewards’ website.

Kahler allegedly purchased 11 items using 57,479 reward points, and each reward point is valued at $0.025. The total amount used was $1,436.98.

According to the complaint, a search warrant was conducted at Kahler’s residence, where five out of the 11 items were found. Kahler told officials that he no longer had the six other items and illegally purchased the items because “he didn’t think anyone cared. “
