The Iowa men’s gymnastics squad finished team competition this past weekend at the Big Ten Championships in Minneapolis, Minn.

The eighth-ranked Hawkeyes finished Day 1 with a score of 422.500. Michigan took home the team title finishing with a 434.050, narrowly edging out Penn State. The Black and Gold placed sixth at the championships.

Iowa held the top team score after five rotations, but a disappointing 66.200 team total on the pommel horse derailed the Hawkeyes’ Big Ten title hopes.

Seniors Brody Shemansky and Javier Balboa led the way for the Hawks. Both earned first team All-Big Ten honors as individuals. The honor was the second All-Big Ten selection for Shemansky, who also earned the same award during last year’s event.

Balboa placed third in the all-around competition with a score of 84.750. The Monterrey, Mexico, native’s all-around score was the highest placing score of the competition for the Hawkeyes. He also took home the still-rings title during the second day of competition with a score of 15.500.

Shemansky placed sixth in the all-around with a score of 83.060.

The Hawkeyes’ next scheduled event is the NCAA championships on April 19-21. The competition will take place on the Penn State campus.

The NCAA championships are the final event of the season for the Hawks. It will mark the end of the college careers of five Hawkeye seniors. Balboa and Shemansky, along with seniors Anton Gryshayev, Todd Becker and Jack McClay will be wearing black and gold for the final time in University Park.
