The Iowa men’s swimming team concluded its 2012-13 season at the NCAA swimming and diving championships in Indianapolis, finishing 32nd overall with 14 points. The Hawkeyes had hoped to break the top 25 this year after finishing at 26th last season.

The squad of sophomore Grant Betulius, junior Andrew Marciniak, and seniors Byron Butler and Jordan Huff finished in 13th-place overall in the 400-medley relay after a 12th-place finish in the preliminary race. During the prelims, the quartet broke the school record with a time of 3:09.66.

Betulius began the prelimimary relay with an additional school record in the 100 backstroke for the fourth time this season with a time of 46.33, besting his 46.70 time at the Big Ten championships.

Betulius broke his school record for a fifth time this season when he competed in the 100 backstroke finals, where he finished in 13th place, touching out at 46.33. Freshman Roman Trussov competed in the 100-breastroke finishing at 33rd with a time of 54.19.

Betulius, junior Andrew Marciniak, Butler, and Huff swam a time of 1:26.42 in the consolation final of the 200-medley relay to finish 16th.

In day three, Betulius competed in the 200 backstroke, which he swam a time of 1:43.93 to finish 32nd. Trussov also took the pool again to compete in the 200 breastroke to finish 24th with a time of 1:56.93.

Michigan won the national title and finished with 480 points ahead, beating last year’s champion, California, which tallied 406.5 points.

The Black and Gold will return to action one more time this season on April 13, where they will host the Long Course Intrasquad Meet.
