UI Writer’s Workshop alum’s debut novel chosen for Oprah’s book club

Last week, Oprah Winfrey chose the novel Twelve Tribes of Hattie, written by 39-year-old Iowa Writers’ Workshop alum Ayana Mathis, as the next book on the list of her newly launched Book Club 2.0.

According to the New York Times, Mathis’ début novel follows the story of Hattie Sheppard, who “is at once a tragic heroine with mythic dimensions and an entirely recognizable mother and wife trying to make ends meet.”

Winfrey said in many interviews that it didn’t take very long for her to fall in love with the book and to know it was going to be the next read for her club.

According to the Network Journal, the novel is now available in bookstores with a first printing of 125,000 copies, an increase from 50,000. It can also be found on Oprah’s Book Club 2.0 website, where she makes highlights and personal notes in the book.
