Iowa’s Ian Vandersee named Big Ten golfer of the week

Iowa men’s golfer Ian Vandersee has been named Big Ten Golfer of the Week. The sophomore received the honor after tying for first place in the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate in Dallas on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Vandersee carded a three-round score of 7 under, the third lowest 54-hole score in Iowa history.

The West Des Moines native hit 6 under in the first round of the tournament, which is tied for the third best 18-hole score in Iowa history.

Vandersee followed his first round effort with a second round score of 1 under and entered the final round 1 stroke back of the lead. He birdied holes 15 and 18 in the final round to card an even par and tie for the tournament lead.

The victory was the first career Division-I first-place finish for Vandersee. It was the 50th time a Hawkeye won a medal in an event.
