The No. 12 Iowa field-hockey team’s season came to an end on Nov. 12 when the squad fell to No. 4 Maryland, 4-2, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in College Park, Md.

The Hawkeyes finished the season with a record of 15-5.

The Terrapins put the first goal on the scoreboard when Jemma Buckley scored at the 4:18 minute mark.

Sophomore forward Kim Scraper answered for the Hawkeyes with a goal 12 minutes later.

"We started off very well," head coach Tracey Griesbaum said in a release. "Our game plan was paying off."

But Maryland added its second goal as the halftime horn sounded.

"Giving up … that second goal going into the locker room at halftime was pretty soft," Griesbaum said. "Maryland executed very well, but that was hard to come back from. I think that made Maryland get more confidence in the second half and really opened it up."

And after a goal by the Terrapins to open the second half, Griesbaum said her squad "ran out of steam."

Scraper added her second goal of the contest and 19th goal of the season in the second half, but the Black and Gold didn’t have enough to come back and salvage their season.

Maryland went on to defeat Syracuse in the quarterfinals, 2-1, en route to a Final Four matchup against Old Dominion on Friday.

"We had pretty lofty goals for today," junior goalkeeper Kathleen McGraw said in the release. "We wanted to come in here and upset Maryland and prove to everyone that the Big Ten is a force to be reckoned with. We fell a little bit short of that, but we’re going to keep our heads up and use this experience for next year when we plan to go all the way in the tournament."
