Hawkeye men’s tennis team has stellar

The Iowa men’s tennis team had what coach Steve Houghton called "one of the better fall weekends we’ve had in years," in two events this weekend.

Four Iowa players went a combined 10-1 in singles competition in the Drake Fall Invitational. Senior Chris Speer, junior Garret Dunn, and freshman Matt Hagan all went undefeated in Flight B of the tournament’s singles draw. The three Hawkeyes were named co-champions of the flight.

Houghton said the performance of the group in singles play was impressive.

"I was really interested in how we would do in singles, and for us to go 10-1 is really something," he said.

Seniors Marc Bruche and Will Vasos advanced to the final of the Baylor-HEB Invitational doubles tournament before falling, 8-4, to the event’s top-ranked team. The pair won their first three matches in the tournament before bowing out in the final, and Vasos added two victories in the consolation bracket of the singles draw.

Houghton said the seniors’ weekend was a huge achievement.

"That tournament had some elite programs, and for them to get to the finals is a big deal," he said. "This should really enhance their national ranking and give them momentum already for NCAAs."
