Man charged with stealing alcohol

According to a complaint by Iowa City police, Samuel Edwards of Winfield, Iowa, was charged with third-degree burglary Sept. 17.

Police received reports of a man taking beer from parked vehicles during the Hawkeye football home game Sept. 17. When an officer responded to the location, Edwards allegedly insisted that he did not take anything from a vehicle and did not possess any beer.

According to the complaint, Edwards then consented to a search of his vehicle and backpack. The responding officer allegedly recovered numerous beers inside the trunk and one in Edwards’ backpack. Edwards then allegedly admitted to taking the beer from an unoccupied vehicle in the parking lot.

Third-degree burglary of a vehicle is an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by up to two years in prison and a fine of $6,250.
