Pop/rock artist Tyrone Wells will return to Iowa City with his self-proclaimed Stevie Wonder morphed into James Taylor and Coldplay sound.

Wells will play songs from his new album as well as some old favorites at 7 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Mill, 120 E. Burlington St. Admission is $15.

The Washington native is looking forward to his return to Iowa City for this tour.

"I always love coming to Iowa City," he said. "It’s been fun for us to see our fan base grow there. We always feel extremely welcome, and there’s always good late-night grub to be had."

Nick Howard will open for Wells, and he very much looks forward to the chance to play for one of his role models.

"I’ve been a fan of Tyrone’s music ever since I moved to the U.S. from England several years ago," Howard said. "Having the opportunity to support someone you’d admired for such a long time is really special, and I can’t wait for the show."

Getting started as a musician took some time for Wells, but his advice for younger artists is to not wait for anyone else to make a career for them, because right now a great time for the independent musician.

"You can make and release your own recordings, you can play shows, and you can promote yourself," Wells said. "With social networks and online activity being what it is, if what you’re doing is moving people, then more and more people will find you."
