Iowa City fire causes thousands of dollars in damage

A fire Wednesday evening left one Iowa City structure with over $40,000 in damages.

According to a press release, the Iowa City Fire Department was dispatched to a burning structure at 1032 Howell Street.

At approximately 1:15 p.m., firefighters responded to reports of a garage fire, sending three engines, a ladder company, and a command vehicle. The first unit on scene reportedly saw fire showing from the front of the detached garage.

Fire crews controlled the blaze within 10 minutes and completely extinguished the fire within half an hour. The residence beside the garage received minor damage, the report said.

The occupants had evacuated, and neither they nor any of the 15 firefighters at the scene were harmed.

Officials are investigating the source of the fire, which caused an estimated $43,000 in damage.
