Previewing the intramural basketball playoffs

After five weeks of intramural basketball in the Field House, the real fun for teams begins on Tuesday.

More than 200 teams participated this season, but only a select few earned the opportunity to show off their skills in the playoffs. The postseason consists of the top two teams from each regular-season group playing in a single-elimination tournament.

When each of the five league’s playoffs is completed, several teams will have the opportunity to go further. The champions from both the Fraternity and Residence Hall tournaments and the top two Men’s Open tournament teams will advance to play in the All-University Final Four.

With the playoffs a day away, here is a rundown of each league.

Co-Recreational

Blar has set the standard in the Co-Recreational league.

With each player on the team previously playing a collegiate sport at some point in time, challenging squads have had a tough time slowing Blar down.

“We’re OK with being the favorites,” said Monica Mims, who expects Blar to win all of its playoff games. “Our overall athleticism is a big strength for our team.”

Other teams to watch include three other squads who have been at the top of the standing the last five weeks: Chino Stoppaz, Dime Pieces, and Team Miralax.

But the Vervinators, currently ranked No. 4 in the Co-Rec standings, could be a dark horse.

“We don’t have any pressure on us,” Vervinators guard Bryan McGinn said. “Our team has good chemistry, and we all have experience playing.”

Fraternity

After winning the Frat league last year, Phi Psi 1 will try to repeat after its undefeated intramural campaign, coming into the playoffs with an 4-0 record.

Sigma Chi, also the two-time defending intramural football champions, could test its fortunes. Fraternity members are hoping to duplicate their fall success on the hardwood.

Open

If UI students are seeking competitive intramural games, the Men’s Open league appears to provide some of the best, boasting a variety of solid teams.

MGR Express and Team T-Gene, which feature Hawkeye basketball managers for both the men’s and women’s teams, are two of the most notable squads. This season, 11 teams went undefeated.

While MGR Express again ran the table in division play, there were others that impressed observers in the intramural-basketball contingent.

Herbal Remedies, H1 and 1, and Brew Crew all defeated their opponents by wide margins.

Brew Crew, which had both 42- and 29-point victories, are ready for the playoffs.

“I think everyone is excited to get back from spring break and start playing again,” team captain Brett DeHoogh said. “It has been fun watching March Madness, but it definitely makes me want to play basketball.”

Residence Hall

While there may be fewer teams in the Residence Hall league, there is no shortage of competition.

Cash Money Records, Matt Abrahamson Experience, and Red Fury lead the charge. All three teams have 4-0 marks and are the favorites to win.

Women’s

Three teams are poised to lead the way in the playoffs, with Tune Squad, the Breakfast Club, and Dime Pieces all receiving first-place votes in the intramural rankings this past week.

Tune Squad, a group composed of primarily freshmen, is at the top of the charts with the No. 1 overall ranking.
