Baseball wins big at challenge

The Iowa baseball team went 2-1 at this year’s Big Ten/Big East Challenge, capping off its weekend with an 11-2 victory over Villanova (5-1) at Jack Russell Stadium on Sunday in Clearwater, Fla.

The Hawkeyes (3-2) defeated Rutgers, 6-3, on Feb. 26, then fell to West Virginia, 9-5, on Feb. 27.

Senior Zach Robertson notched his second victory of the season on Sunday. The lefty allowed just two runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings of work. Robertson also tallied six strikeouts.

Iowa’s offense belted 16 hits against the Wildcats. Senior Ryan Durant led the way, going 4-for-5 with one home run and three RBIs.

Junior Kurtis Muller went 3-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to 16 games, which dates back to the 2009 season. Muller, hitting .476 on the season in 21 at-bats, also knocked in two runs and scored twice.

Sophomore Sean Flanagan blasted a solo home run to lead-off the seventh inning for the Hawkeyes.

Iowa will next travel to Lawrence, Kan., for a four-game weekend set with Kansas (4-1). The series opener is set for 3 p.m. Friday.
