Soccer heads to Purdue

The Iowa soccer team will travel to West Lafayette, Ind., on Saturday for a match with No. 23 Purdue at noon.

In their final match of the season, the Hawkeyes (9-10, 1-8) have a chance to record double-digit wins for the first time since 2002 — something Iowa head coach Ron Rainey said would “be a great goal to reach.”

The Boilermakers (10-5-3, 4-3-2) are tied for fourth place in the Big Ten and could earn a NCAA Tournament berth with a win.

Iowa sits in last place in the conference.

Purdue downed the Hawkeyes last season, 2-1, and it leads the overall series 5-3-2. Iowa has outscored its opponents this season, 32-26.

“All of those different things will make for a good, competitive game,” Rainey said. “Purdue is a good team. They keep the ball well. They attack well. I think that if we go out and compete, we’ll have another close game like a lot of the Big Ten games have been. I like how we’ve progressed the last couple weeks.”
