Oral to speak on protecting Turkish children

Resmiye Oral, clinical director of the UI Child Protection Program, will speak today about efforts to help protect Turkish children from abuse and neglect.

Oral, also a UI clinical associate professor of pediatrics, will take place at noon in the Iowa City Public Library, 123 S. Linn., according to a UI news release.

The event is part of the International Mondays lecture series and is free and open to the public.

The collaboration between the UI program and Turkish officials began in 2002 with the goal of seeing the establishment of a national child abuse and neglect prevention program. The alliance worked to develop a training program in Turkey to increase professional awareness, regional collaborations and assessed cases, according to the release.

In addition to advocating in Turkey, Oral is working to extend child abuse services to remote areas of Iowa through telemedicine.
