2 women to donate quilt

Two local women will donate a quilt they made in honor of their sons who are serving in the military to the UI at the Second UI Veterans Day Reception next week.

Kathy Last, a UI staff member, created the quilt’s red, white and blue pattern and Peg Griffin-Wood of Common Threads Quilt Shoppe in North Liberty quilted it together. After the two donate it to the university, the quilt will be permanently displayed in the IMU.

The reception will be held on Nov. 10 from 3 to 5 p.m. in the IMU Second Floor Ballroom and will include remarks from Drew Hjelm, president of the UI Veterans Association, Rep. Dave Loebsack, D-Iowa, and other university officials.

After the reception, the UI Veterans Association will host a screening and discussion of Lioness, a documentary on female Army support soldiers.

The UI has more than 300 student veterans and around 300 faculty and staff veterans, said John Mikelson, UI Veterans Center adviser.
