Hawkeye great Lester donates $100,000

Former Iowa basketball legend Ronnie Lester donated $100,000 to support enhancements for Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The UIFoundation is seeking $20 million in a campaign to renovate the arena.

Lester put in a request that the training room inside the arena be named in honor of assistant athletics trainer and travel coordinator John Streif, who the former Hawkeye All-American calls a close friend.

“He has worked tirelessly to support me and numerous other athletes for over four decades now,” Lester said in a statement released on Monday. “His dedication to the Hawkeyes is legendary, and I’m honored to name the training room for him.”

Lester, who is an assistant general manager of the Los Angeles Lakers, said in the same statement he was pleased to make the gift toward the fundraising effort given his role as a member of the campaign’s committee.
