A popular Dance Marathon tradition is when students volunteer to shave their heads. Lots of dancers shave the hair off their heads every year for the event, “Short Hair, Don’t Care.”

Hair cut off, if long enough, is donated to the Locks of Love non-profit organization. Locks of Love provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under the age of 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis, according to their website.

Every year, Locks of Love donates hair prostheses to approximately 2,200 children under twenty years old.

Some Dance Marathon participates influenced that number earlier today.

Dancer Amber Hoffman donated with kids in need in mind.

“I just think that it’s just hair and I can live without it,” she said. “But maybe there’s someone who can’t. I was a little nervous at first but I got over it.”

Another dancer, Sarah Staley, got the idea to donate her hair after her friend told her about the positive benefits.

“My good friend told me that there is a little girl out there that needs the hair more than I do,” she said.

Other dancers participated as well, including Nicole Hoffman, a second time donor.

“I did it three years ago,” she said. “It was just time to do again for the kids.”

Other dancers donated as well, including two who shaved their heads completely, Jolene Tiggers and Vince LaPelusa.
