Iowa wrestling sweeps at Luther Open

The Iowa wrestling team opened its 2014-15 season by sweeping all 10 weight classes in the Elite Division at the Luther Open in Decorah this past weekend.

Cory Clark and Bobby Telford submitted the most-dominating performances of the weekend; both wrestlers pinned through their opponents at 133 and 285 pounds, respectively. It was the second-straight year both wrestlers took first place at the Luther Open (Clark won at 125 pounds last season).

In addition to Clark and Telford, Josh Dziewa (141), Mike Evans (174), and Michael Kelly (157) all won their second-straight Luther Open titles. Dziewa and Evans successfully defended their 2013 titles, and Kelly bumped up a weight class for this year’s tournament (he won at 149 last season).

Brody Grothus topped two Iowa teammates to finish first at 149 pounds. He beat Brandon Sorensen, 3-2, in the semifinals and earned a 9-6 decision over Edwin Cooper in the finals.

Thomas Gilman, Nick Moore, Sammy Brooks, and Nathan Burak combined for 16 bonus-point victories en route to titles at 125, 165, 184, and 197 pounds, respectively. In all, Iowa wrestlers managed 29 pins in the Elite Division.

Other Iowa wrestlers competed at the Luther Open, too. Topher Carton placed fifth at 141 pounds. Sorensen placed third at 149. Logan Thomsen and Patrick Rhoads placed third and fourth, respectively, at 157 pounds. Alex Meyer took second behind Evans at 174, and Kris Klapprodt did the same at 197 behind Burak.

Iowa also took home two titles in the Silver Division. Logan Ryan defeated teammate Seth Gross, 2-1, to win at 141 pounds. Sam Stoll collected four pins to finish first at 285.

The Hawkeyes will compete again on Friday in the Iowa City Duals. Competition will begin at 9 a.m. in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
