Man charged with stealing cell phone

An Iowa City man has been charged after allegedly stealing an iPhone and selling it on the Pedestrian Mall.

Xavier Turner, 21, was charged July 5 with third-degree theft.

According to an Iowa City police complaint, Turner stole a $700 iPhone 5 from a person who had been sleeping while in a study session at the Iowa City Public Library, 123 S. Linn St.

He was allegedly identified on a surveillance camera and matched the description given by a witness, the complaint said. During an interview with police officials, he reportedly admitted to stealing the phone and selling it to an unknown person on the Ped Mall 20 minutes later.

Third-degree theft is an aggravated misdemeanor.
