Iowa baseball heads down to Texas for the weekend

The Iowa baseball team will play three games as part of the Kleberg Bank College Classic hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in Corpus Christi this weekend.

The first game for the Hawkeyes will be against No. 14 Oklahoma today. The Sooners are 6-0 and will send Dillon Overton to the mound — he has only allowed 4 hits and 1 earned run in 8 innings.

Iowa will take on New Mexico (1-2) in its second game on Saturday. The Lobos have had a fast start to the season on offense with six players hitting .385 or higher.

The Black and Gold will then finish off their weekend against host A&M-Corpus Christi. The Islanders sport a 3-2 record and are coming off of a 19-4 loss to the Texas-San Antonio in which they committed five errors.

The Hawkeyes will send the starting pitching trio of sophomore Sasha Kuebel, senior Matt Dermody, and freshman Calvin Matthews to the mound in the three games.

Last weekend, Iowa dropped two of three games to Austin Peay in the club’s first series of the season. The Hawkeyes lost the opening game, 4-2, won the second game, 13-1, and lost the finale 6-1.

After the initial weekend of games, Iowa has the second lowest team ERA in the Big Ten at 1.80. The only other Big Ten team with a lower ERA is Indiana at 1.09.
