USA Dance hosts workshop and performance

This Saturday, put your dancing shoes on and come join USA Dance for a night of ballroom dancing.

The nonprofit organization helps to provide quality dance instruction to community members of Iowa City in such dances as the tango, salsa, swing, and more.

The group meets every month, but this Saturday at Old Brick, 26 E. Market St., USA Dance will have the opportunity to provide both workshops and a dance in the same day.

At 3 p.m. Saturday, the group will hold a salsa workshop followed by a tango workshop at 4:15 p.m. Admission is $15 each or $20 for both workshops — the price includes admission to the dance at 7:30 p.m. as well.

If community members are just interested in attending the dance, admission is $6 for members, $8 for nonmembers, and $4 for students.

USA Dance hires local instructors to teach participants the skills they need in order to master ballroom dance for the night.

It is not necessary to show up with a dance partner — the organization provides mixers throughout the evening in which attendees can switch up with whom they dance.

Rosemary Guehrn, who serves on the USA Dance board and also participates in the workshops and dances, said it has been a great way to meet new people in the community.

"I wish I discovered dancing earlier in my life," she said. "It’s great exercise, and I’ve learned how to do many different dances in the process."
