IC council to consider immigrant proposals

Iowa City city staff sent responses, recommendations and comments for each of the nine ordinances submitted by the Iowa City Human Rights Commission, according to the council information packet.

The proposals were a part of the Building Safe Communities proposal, which aims to create a safer environment for documented and undocumented immigrants within Iowa City.

The proposals suggest making city services more understandable and accessible to immigrants, educating the community about immigration issues, and making city officials more aware of the problems within immigrant communities.

City staff responded to each ordinance with comments on ways in which at least certain aspects of the ordinance could be implemented.

The proposals will be voted on at the City Council’s formal meeting Nov. 22.
