Trial set in shooting

The trial date has been set for the end of March for an Iowa City man charged in a shooting death.

Alajuwon Shamar Johnson, 26, was charged Jan. 1 with involuntary manslaughter in the death of 20-year-old Kylie Jo Perkins.

Johnson was also charged with the possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and carrying weapons.

According to police reports, Johnson was illegally carrying a concealed weapon when he visited Perkins’ apartment. Both he and Perkins handled the weapon before it accidentally discharged and allegedly struck her in the upper torso, officers said.

The trial is set for March 29 at 9 a.m., with a pretrial conference set for March 18 at 1:45 p.m.
