A dance team of senior citizens stole the spotlight today and danced in red feather boas to match their elbow-length red gloves.

The Center, a senior living organization in Johnson County, had some members preform to the Dance Marathon crowd for the eighth consecutive time.

The team does events in retirement homes, and other locations for charity events such as Dance Marathon.

The group is lead by Shirely Myers who has been on the team since it’s beginning. She talked about the group’s role in Dance Marathon.

“We love being a part of this event,” she said. “The vibe is so great here and we love still being able to do it even though we’re seventy years old.”

One of the members that dances with Myers, Shelagh Hayreh, talked about supporting Dance Marathon.

“We love supporting these wonderful students at this wonderful event,” she said. “And it’s a great way for us seventy year olds to stay in shape.”

The last song the team performed was “On Iowa.” The song has lyrics, but most students don’t know them. Luckily, the lyrics were projected on the front screens which allowed dancers to sing along.

The crowd was fully engaged with The Center dancers.

Dancer Audra Tebbe said she enjoyed the performance.

“I didn’t really know there were words to the song,” she said. “It’s kind of cool now we all know them.”
