Stoughton earns third Big Ten swimming weekly award

Iowa women’s swimmer Becky Stoughton was named Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Week in a release from the league office on Tuesday.

Stoughton was honored for her performance against Northwestern and Harvard on Jan. 21. The Peoria, Ill., native won the 1,000, 500, and 200 freestyles and anchored the winning 400-freestyle relay. The relay’s time of 3:24.65 was an NCAA "B" qualifying time.

The award is Stoughton’s third conference honor this season. She claimed the Freshman of the Week title on Jan. 10 for her numerous wins at No. 5 Arizona; she also earned Swimmer of the Week honors on Nov. 8 after she broke school records in the 1,000 and 500 freestyles and the 400 individual medley.

Stoughton and the Hawkeyes’ next competition will come at the Shamrock Invitational in South Bend, Ind., on Jan. 27-28.
