Iowa City officials would like to apply for $750,000 in state Department of Transportation grants for the development of a landscaped median on Burlington Street.
According to the Sept. 20 Iowa City City Council agenda, officials are seeking permission from councilors to apply for the "Statewide Transportation Enhancement Program." If the city receives funding, officials plan to develop the median — extending from the Iowa River to Capitol Street along Burlington.
This project would increase pedestrian safety and enhance aesthetics along the street. The minimum local match requirement for the program is 30 percent of the project cost, according to the agenda.
Funds provided by the University of Iowa may be applied to help furnish the local match requirement.
