Iowa finished 19th out of 21 teams in the elite division at the Oct.2 Notre Dame Invitational, while New Mexico took home first place.

NC State placed second, and Notre Dame finished third in the division.

Hawkeye sophomore Madison Waymire finished 47th for the Hawks with a time of 17.22.7, a 30-second improvement over her time at Illinois State Invitational on Sept.11. She has been the top runner for the Hawks in all three races this season.

Juniors Tess Wilberding (100th) and Carolyn Newhouse (124th) ran season bests. The two placed second and third among the Hawkeyes.

Redshirt sophomore Kelly Breen (18:19.4) and freshman Andrea Shine (18:21.2) posted personal-best times to conclude Iowa’s scoring.

Although the results might not show it, the Hawkeyes made steady improvements over the previous two competitions. Overall, head coach Layne Anderson was happy with the performance.

“The women raced well all the way,” he said in a release. “I think their performance as a whole is overshadowed by the results. There were a few personal bests, and we had some progress today going against tough teams.”
