The Johnson County Board of Supervisors approved an amendment to the fiscal 2025 budget in the most recent formal meeting, reallocating funds to enhance public safety, health services, environmental programs, and capital projects.
This decision follows a public hearing held in accordance with Iowa’s Chapter 331, during which the Board reviewed and discussed adjustments to the budget’s allocation for services and projects across the county.
The approved amendment includes significant boosts in funding for public safety. The funds were allocated to the Johnson County Ambulance Service, the County Sheriff’s Office, the Medical Examiner, and other legal services. This sector saw a $570,545 increase, amounting to $40,709,502 in total.
County officials also expanded funding for County Environment & Education programs, including those under Planning, Development & Sustainability, which will receive additional support to advance community initiatives focused on environmental sustainability and public awareness. The amendment increases sector funding by $752,976 for a total of $10,360,171.

Health and social services were similarly given a boost in funding, with an increase of $23,439 directed to the departments of Public Health and Social Services, though the Board also made slight reductions elsewhere in this area to balance other growing needs.
The most substantial portion of the amendment is the change seen in the capital projects. This amendment increases the county’s capital budget by over $5 million, which will support ongoing and new investments in infrastructure. An additional $500,000 will be transferred from the General Basic Fund to the Capital Projects Fund to aid this development.
These amendments do not result in additional taxes for residents. The adjustments will remain within existing revenue streams for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2025.
