A sixth-generation Iowan and current Iowa House representative embarking on a run to become the state’s next governor.

In a Tuesday news release, Democrat Tyler Olson, 37, officially announced his Iowa gubernatorial bid.

The Cedar Rapids native and University of Iowa College of Law alumnus currently serves as the representative for House District 65 and as the vice president of Paulson Electric, a more than 80-year-old family-run business.

He said the state is in need of new political leadership to push Iowa into the modern day, the release said.

“With fresh leadership, our state can be known as a place where someone can dream it, build it, grow it, and keep it, right here in Iowa,” he said.

Olson intends to address the issues of building the economy “from the middle out,” accessing affordable health care, creating equal opportunity in education, and encouraging strong community connection.

Though he has won the majority of voters under the age of 35, he continues to trail in the poll standings, an early June Iowa Poll shows.

If elected, Olson would be the second governor from Cedar Rapids, the first of whom was Republican Bourke Hickenlooper, who snagged the seat in 1943.

After graduating from the UI in 2008, Olson worked in Washington, D.C., before returning to Cedar Rapids.

Looking to the campaign, Olson said in the release that he wants to get started on where the state should be positioned in the next thirty years.

“A 30 years where our state can be known as the place where no matter where you came from, no matter your circumstances, no matter who you love, or anything else, that if you’re willing to be a part of moving our great state forward, than anyone who can dream it, who can build it, who can grow it, can do so right here in Iowa.”
