A Texas man has been charged after allegedly speeding under the influence of alcohol in Iowa City.

Nolan Melson, 24, Killeen, Texas, was charged Sunday with operating a vehicle while intoxicated. This is Melson’s first OWI offense.

According to an Iowa City police complaint, Melson was pulled over for speeding near the intersection of Riverside Drive and Benton Street on Sunday.

Officers reported that Melson had red, watery eyes, impaired balance, and smelled of ingested alcohol, but he initially denied drinking alcohol.

He was allegedly measurably impaired on a field sobriety test, the complaint said, and his preliminary breath test measured a blood-alcohol content of 0.111 percent.

After the test, Melson admitted to drinking a beer five hours before the stop, the complaint said.

DataMaster breath test results showed a blood-alcohol content of 0.122 percent.

First-offense OWI is a serious misdemeanor.
