A Cedar Rapids woman has been accused of forging a check for $346.89.

Amanda Brown, 23, was charged March 26 with forgery and fourth-degree theft.

According to an Iowa City police complaint, Iowa City police responded to 1935 Keokuk St. after receiving a report of a fraudulent check being passed at the business.

Officials spoke with the business manager, and the business manager said she took what she thought was a legitimate check from Brown, the complaint said. The manager told officials she gave Brown cash in the amount of the check.

The amount on the check was $346.89. The check appeared to be from Dancers Ranch in Cedar Rapids, the complaint said.

Officials received a call from Brown on March 26. During the conversation, Brown told officials that she cashed the counterfeit check for a man named “Devon,” the complaint said.

According to the complaint, Brown allegedly does not know anything else about “Devon.” Brown offered to turn herself in and admitted she realized what she did was wrong.

The check was verified as counterfeit, the complaint said.

Forgery is a Class-D felony. Fourth-degree theft is serious misdemeanor.
