Two local residents were accused of possessing approximately 11 grams of crack cocaine.

Michael Cheeks, 24, was charged Tuesday with controlled substance violation and taxable substance violation. Rhonda Perry, 53, was charged Tuesday with taxable substance violation and controlled substance violation.

According to a Johnson County Sheriff’s Office complaint, investigators conducted a controlled undercover transaction with Perry at an Iowa City Hy-Vee.

Perry provided six individual bags allegedly containing crack cocaine to the official in exchange for three hundred dollars. Prior to the transaction, Perry met with Cheeks to obtain the crack, the complaint said.

Shortly after the transaction, officials stopped Cheeks and Perry’s vehicle. Perry was sitting in the front passenger seat, when officials allegedly saw Perry attempting to hide a plastic bag with a “rocky” substance in it, the complaint said.

According to the complaint, Perry handed the plastic bag to officials. However when asked to step out of the vehicle, Perry dropped a larger bag that allegedly contained crack cocaine.

Perry told officials that the crack cocaine came from Cheeks, the complaint said.

Controlled substance violation is a Class-C felony. Taxable substance violation is a Class-D felony.
