The Iowa City City Council will meet today at 7 p.m. to vote on a number of ordinances.

After the Planning and Zoning Commission defeated a motion to approve the rezoning of College and Gilbert Streets at its March 18 meeting, the applicant requested the City Council consider the request. The City Council will consider a motion setting a public hearing on the rezoning request. If approved, a public hearing would be held on May 14 regarding an ordinance rezoning that space from public to CB-5 zoning. Approval of rezoning the property to CB-5 would limit the height of building on this property to 75 feet. The City Council previously approved the development of the Chauncey at this site, which will be taller than 75 feet.

The City Council may vote to rezone Hawkeye Court. The resolution would rezone the area from Institutional Public (P-2) to Institutional Public/Medium-Density Multi-Family (P-2/RM-20). Approval of the ordinance would allow publicly owned land to be leased and developed for privately owned multifamily buildings.

The City Council will also consider a resolution authorizing the city to ask for transit assistance and funding. City officials intend to file an application with the Iowa Department of Transportation for fiscal 2014 Iowa DOT State Transit Assistance and Federal Transit Administration funding. Iowa City Transit would receive approximately $435,245 in state funds.

City councilors will also consider a resolution awarding the replacement of a transit-fare collection system. Approval of the joint request for proposal with Iowa City and Coralville would replace the existing collection system, which includes 29 fare boxes, management software, pass-encoding equipment, and vault and fare media.
