A local man has been accused of committing a burglary in several residential homes.

James Travis Jr., 21, was charged Jan. 13 with third-degree burglary, Jan. 28 with third-degree burglary, and Feb. 7 with third-degree theft and fourth-degree theft.

Iowa City police responded to a report of a burglary in a residential area. According to the police complaint, several electronics, personal correspondence, and miscellaneous items were taken.

The victim of another burglary suspected Travis of committing the burglary against him. The victim searched through Travis’ trash after he set it by the curb. According to the police complaint, the victim found several personal items that belong to the victim.

The victim reported his findings to Iowa City police officials, and a search warrant was conducted at Travis’ residence.

Officials located a television in Travis’ bedroom that had been reported stolen from a burglary at a Cedar Rapids residence on Nov. 29, 2012, the complaint said. A jewelry box was also located in the bedroom, which was taken from the same burglary.

The two items were valued between $500 to $1,000.

According to the complaint, officials also located a laptop computer that was stolen from a Cedar Rapids residence on Nov. 28, 2012.

The laptop was valued at $500.

Third-degree burglary is a Class-D felony. Third-degree theft is an aggravated misdemeanor. Fourth-degree theft is a serious misdemeanor.
