The recycling competition is over, and the results are in.

RecycleMania, a competition for college and university recycling programs to promote waste-reduction activities in their communities ended March 30.

The University of Iowa finished 138th in the competition and fifth among the eight Big Ten participants, according to the final results posted on April 12. the University of Missouri-Kansas City won the contest.

The cumulative recycling rate was 28.19 percent over the eight-week period. The UI recycled 313,674 pounds of materials.

The UI Sustainability Office engaged students with games and education sessions at the different dining halls on campus. A competition between the East Side residence halls and the West Side residence halls was also conducted during the eight weeks.

The West dorms won the competition with 29.9 percent of their waste being recycled, compared with the 27.9 percent for the East dorms.

George McCrory, a communications specialist for the Sustainability Office, said he was proud of the UI’s participation, and the university will continue in the competition in the future.

“RecycleMania was a great way to generate excitement around campus about recycling and is an important tool that we use in pursuit of our 60 percent waste-diversion target,” he wrote in an email. “We’ll continue RecylceMania in the future and will evaluate the results and look at the efforts of high-performing institutions in the contest.”
