The trial date has been set for Peng Tang, an Iowa City man who was charged with first-degree kidnapping last month.

Tang, who had lived at 923 E. College St. No. 8, was arrested after he allegedly sexually assaulted a woman while viewing her West Benton Street apartment for a potential sublease, according to court documents.

After the alleged kidnapping, police had the woman message Tang, who agreed to meet her again.

Once Tang showed up at the woman’s apartment, she identified him as the person who assaulted her and he was taken into custody, according to a police search warrant.

Tang was also charged April 13 with solicitation to commit an aggravated misdemeanor and tampering with a witness or juror after allegedly sending a letter to a friend from the Johnson County Jail, asking that person to locate the woman in the kidnapping case and persuade her to drop the charges.

Tang’s bond was increased by $50,000 because of the tampering charge, bringing the total bond to $800,000, Johnson County Jail officials have said.

A pretrial conference is set for May 25, and the trial is set to begin June 5.
