University of Iowa police responded to a call on Jefferson Street about a black car on fire near Halsey Hall on Monday morning.
UI fire-safety coordinator Bruce McAvoy said officials determined the car had a mechanical failure, causing it to catch fire in the engine. Burned material from the fire produced a strong odor near the front of the engine.
A UI student was driving toward Calvin Hall, where she had an appointment, when the incident occurred.
The fire was put out at 10:30 a.m.
