A Cedar Rapids woman was charged with second-degree theft, tampering with records, and possession of prescription drugs.

According to an Iowa City police complaint, Rose Hayslett, 58, was charged March 22 with 15 counts.

Between Sept. 30, 2009, and Jan. 10, 2010, Hayslett, a former nurse at Mercy Hospital, 500 E. Market St., was reportedly withdrawing medication but did not document it correctly.

According to the report, during an interview with police officials, Hayslett said she abused the medication when she could get away with it, and other employed nurses reportedly observed behavior by the defendant during her shifts that would indicate she was under the influence of a narcotic.

Possession of prescription drugs is considered a serious misdemeanor.

Tampering with records is considered an aggravated misdemeanor.

Second-degree theft is considered a Class-D felony and is punishable of up to five years in jail and a maximum fine of $7,500.
