An Iowa City man has been charged with identity theft and forgery.

According to Iowa City police, Pablo Gomez, 25, 500 Second Ave., allegedly received a check in the mail addressed to someone else. Gomez allegedly endorsed it with the person’s name and made it payable to himself, cashing it into his account at the Hills Bank in Iowa City, the report said.

Gomez later admitted to a bank employee he had cashed the check, valued at $555, the report said. Police said Gomez later admitted to police he had forged the check.

Forgery and identity theft are a Class D felonies punishable by up to five years in jail and a maximum fine of $7,500. Third-degree theft is an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by up to two years in jail and a maximum fine of $6,250.
