An Iowa City resident was arrested July 10 and charged with stealing from a homeless man. Now, police say, he allegedly stole more than $10,000 of jewelry from a house in which a party was held.
Austin Craig Guthmiller, 22, 3525 Shamrock Place, was charged with first-degree theft.
According to Iowa City police, the alleged victim left his home for a few days, leaving his adult daughter to watch the house. When he returned, he said he noticed several pieces of jewelry were missing.
The stolen items were located at Herteen and Stocker Jewelers, 101 S. Dubuque St., on Tuesday.
Guthmiller’s ID was scanned when he sold the items on July 4 and July 9. He was also recorded by store surveillance cameras as one of two people selling the jewelry, according to reports.
The other man, 20-year-old Eric M. Cole, was arrested and charged with first-degree theft, aiding and abetting.
The alleged victim said he knew Cole because he’d allowed him to live in his house recently.
