Republican challenger Matt Schultz has unseated Secretary of State Michael Mauro, a race too close to call late Tuesday night. Schultz won almost 50 percent of the statewide vote while first-term Democrat Mauro earned just short of 47 percent. Libertarian Jake Porter won 3 percent.
Under Mauro’s tenure, the state moved to allow Iowa voters to register to vote on Election Day. Schultz has indicated he will push to require voters to show identification at polling places to protect against voter fraud.
