Mount Vernon-Lisbon Sun and Solon Economist Paid Internships

The School of Journalism and Mass Communication (SJMC) and The Daily Iowan are currently hiring reporting, design, and business interns to work at the Mount Vernon-Lisbon Sun and Solon Economist.

The Mount Vernon-Lisbon Sun and Solon Economist are weekly community newspapers owned and operated by The Daily Iowan. Interns work alongside professional staff and students in various SJMC classes to produce original content published in print and online.

Applications for internships will be accepted at any time with the following priority deadlines:

Priority application deadlines: 

  • Spring 2025: January 15, 2025
  • Summer 2025: April 15, 2025
  • Fall 2025: June 15, 2025

Reporting Intern

Students will work with the papers’ editors, other interns, and professional staff at The Daily Iowan to produce news for the two weekly papers (print and online). 

Interns will learn about community reporting and working at a weekly paper.

Required qualifications:

  • Strong reporting skills
  • Excellent writing skills 
  • Copyediting skills
  • Highly organized and able to work independently 
  • You will be expected to travel to Solon, Mount Vernon/Lisbon, and surrounding communities

Preferred qualifications:

  • Photography skills, or willingness to learn 

The start date is flexible and will be determined in consultation with the supervisors.

The interns will be SJMC student employees expected to work 10-20 hours per week ($13.00 per hour) supervised by Melissa Tully ([email protected]). 

Interns will report to Jason Brummond, Publisher ([email protected]), Chris Umscheid at the Solon Economist, and Nathan Countryman at the Mount Vernon-Lisbon Sun

Design Intern

Students will work with professional staff to design weekly newspapers at Mt. Vernon-Lisbon Sun and Solon Economist. Interns will learn about community reporting and working at a weekly paper.

Required qualifications:

  • Proficiency in Adobe InDesign
  • Strong design skills
  • Copy editing skills
  • Highly organized and able to work independently 

The start date is flexible and will be determined in consultation with the supervisors.

The intern will be an SJMC student employee expected to work 10-15 hours per week ($13.00 per hour) supervised by Melissa Tully ([email protected]).

Most of the work will be completed on Friday through Monday with dedicated availability on Monday preferred.

Business Intern 

The intern will work with professional staff to support the business functions of the Mount Vernon-Lisbon Sun and Solon Economist, including working on ad sales, subscriptions, and building new audiences.

Interns will learn about the news industry, newspaper publishing, community reporting, and working at a weekly paper.

 Required qualifications:

  • Interest in the business-side of news as evidenced by previous internship/job experience and/or relevant coursework
  • Highly organized and able to work independently 

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with Excel or willingness to learn 

The start date is flexible and will be determined in consultation with the supervisors.

The interns will be SJMC student employees expected to work 10-12 hours per week ($13.00 per hour) supervised by Melissa Tully ([email protected]). 

 Interns will report to Jason Brummond, Publisher ([email protected]), and Debra Plath, Business Manager ([email protected]).
